Kamari beach

Kamari beach

Kamari beach is located along the southeastern coast of Santorini, about 10 kilometers south-east of Fira (the capital).
Kamari beach is among the busiest on the island of Santorini, and is one of the liveliest seaside destinations as well as being the largest beach on Santorini. Once you arrive you will be fascinated by its black color, with pebbles of volcanic origin and by the clear and calm sea ... having said that it is better to bring flip-flops to reach the shoreline ... in certain hours of the day walks could be rather difficult because of heat that emanates from the beach.

Upon your arrival the first thing you will notice is the large "Mesa Vouno" rock that rises from the sea and divides the long stretch of sand into two. Immediately after this large boulder you will find Perissa beach and than our beloved Kamari.

If you are fond of trekking and long walks, you can walk up Mesa Vouno taking the marked trail. Or if the idea of arriving at the top appeals to you but you are not very experienced in hiking you can go up by car, moped or with a nice donkey. On the top of the high promontory you can visit the wonderful excavation site of the Ancient Thera. This large city now no longer inhabited, is now rich in ruins sown in 150 meters wide and 800 meters long. Here you can especially appreciate the Party Terrace, a place where once, in honor of Apollo, people celebrated and sang happily. Founded in the 9th century BC C., the Ancient Thera was inhabited by the Dorians and then occupied in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Until our days, buildings from the 4th century BC.

The archaeological site develops along a main road that leads to two Agoràs where you can admire countless remains of Greek temples; including the Temple of Dionysus and the Sanctuary of Apollo Karneios. The traces also include the Roman Baths, the Byzantine walls, the Sanctuary of Artemidoro, dug out of the living rock, and the stone church of Agios Stefanos. A paid guide is also available to help you better understand the language of the remains. But we recommend booking, because otherwise you could risk not finding a place.
In addition to the site, of course, from here you can enjoy a spectacular view across the bay, don't forget the camera!

At Kamari beach it is possible to practice water sports, in particular diving and snorkeling; great to do here since the bay has been awarded the Blue Flag. From the first moment you dive in, you will immediately understand how exciting it is to dive into these beautiful and crystal clear waters, a real adventure tour in unspoiled nature! But in reality, thanks to the wind that often blows over the bay, even sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing are very popular in this area of the island of Santorini. Alternatively you can also practice paragliding or rent jet skis ... in short .. you have the embarrassment of the choice and you have no excuse to stay still under the umbrella.

Kamari beach is equipped with bars, restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues and stalls that you can easily find on the seafront. Obviously sunbeds and umbrellas are always at your disposal and in most cases you can have them for free if you also buy something for lunch. Moreover the staff of these bars and clubs is always very kind and helpful, which is good!
The road alongside Kamari beach is full of bars, restaurants, clothing stores, minimarkets, ouzerie and gyros shops. In short, you will be spoiled for choice!

This beach is synonymous with comfort, whatever you want. Kamari beach is also reachable by bus from Fira (not only by car / scooter).
What are you waiting for? Come and discover this unmissable beach of the island of Santorini!
