Marathonissi Island

The magnificent Marathonissi Island, also known as the "turtle island" is located in the Gulf of Laganas, a short distance from the southern coast of the island of Zakynthos.
It is an enchanting uninhabited islet with an enchanting sea and a large white beach.

The island of Marathonissi is part of the Marine National Park and is protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The name "turtle island" derives in part from its shape, but mainly from the fact that the Caretta Caretta turtles, a protected species of sea turtles, lay their eggs here. According to legend, it was the gods who gave the island of Marathonissi this shape reminiscent of a turtle.

On the island of Marathonissi you will find two splendid beaches, one of white sand that slopes gently towards the turquoise sea and resembles a Caribbean beach, where turtles come to lay their eggs. The other beach is made of white pebbles and is perfect for snorkelling. From here, in fact, it is possible to explore the nearby sea caves and admire the splendid seabed rich in fish and starfish. If you are lucky you can also see a rare example of a monk seal, which shelters itself from the sun in one of the caves.

How to get to Marathonissi?

Marathonissi Island can be reached in a few minutes by boat from the ports of Laganas, Agios Sostis and Porto Koukla. There are many gulet excursions that are organized for the island of Marathonissi.

If you are adventurous and above all trained you can try to reach the island by canoe and if you are lucky you can meet some turtles during the journey.

Our advice

Being a protected area, there is no structure on the island of Marathonissi, so if you decide to stay for the whole day, bring plenty of water and food with you and don't forget sunscreen!

It is important to know and respect the rules of this enchanting place, to preserve its beauty and allow turtles to nest in peace. The Marathonissi island can only be visited during the day and must not exceed 5 meters from the shore, to avoid damaging the nests.

What you can certainly do is relax on the shore of this pristine island and dive into the crystal clear water .. in such a place you will not need anything else ..

If you have decided to rent a boat we recommend you to visit the nearby Keri Caves, located immediately after Cape Marathia and stop in one of the many hidden beaches on the coast south of Zakynthos. It will be an unforgettable experience!
